In reality, there is no separate disability called “deaf and dumb.” These children are mainly deaf or hard of hearing. They are not born mute, and there may be no defect in their speech organs.
Just as we may not be able to speak an unfamiliar language—for example, Malayalam—because we have never heard or learned that language, similarly, if a child cannot hear because of hearing loss, the child does not get the opportunity to hear and learn a language. How, then, can the child learn to speak that language?
Hearing and language development are very closely connected. If a child cannot hear, the child does not get the opportunity to learn language through hearing, and this can affect speech development. Therefore, what may appear to be “dumbness” in many cases is actually a consequence of hearing loss.
Why Is Hearing Loss So Difficult to Recognise?
Hearing loss is a serious condition that can have a major impact on a child’s life. The greatest difficulty, however, is that hearing loss is usually not visible from outside.
The ears may look completely normal. The child may look healthy and well-nourished like other children. The child crawls, sits, stands and plays normally. Since the child’s physical growth and movements appear normal, parents may not initially realise that the child cannot hear properly.
Sometimes parents may have a slight doubt, or relatives, doctors or others may point it out. Even then, it may be ignored.
For most parents, accepting that their child may have a disability or a developmental problem is emotionally difficult. Therefore, even when the problem is noticed, there may be a tendency to ignore it by saying, “There is nothing wrong. The child will be fine after growing up.”
The Dangerous Misconception: “The Child Will Speak Slowly”
The child gradually grows. Even at one and a half to two years of age, the child may not speak like other children. Only then do the parents begin to think seriously about the problem.
Even at this stage, accepting the possibility of a disability can be difficult. Elderly family members or people around them often reassure the parents:
“The child will speak… slowly. Some children speak late.”
In reality, this is an important misconception that is common in society.
Parents should not ignore the child’s language development. They should observe whether the child responds to sounds according to age, turns towards the source of a sound, understands words and starts using words.
If there is a delay in language or speech development, a hearing assessment should be done as early as possible.
Assuming that the child will simply “speak late” and waiting for several months can be dangerous.
The First Three Years Are Important
Such delay can result in the loss of some of the most valuable early years of a child’s life.
The first three years are especially important for brain development, exposure to sound, language learning and development of communication skills.
Therefore, if there is any suspicion that a child has difficulty hearing, parents should not adopt a “Let us wait for some more time” approach. Hearing assessment, proper diagnosis and necessary rehabilitation should be started as early as possible.
For a child with hearing loss, time is the most valuable thing.
Superstitions, Misconceptions and Loss of Valuable Time
Even after hearing loss is recognised, another major danger is the various measures taken because of superstitions, misconceptions and lack of proper knowledge.
Parents may be advised:
“It may be because of something from a previous birth,” “There may be some negative influence,” “Perform Tripindi,” “Perform Narayan Nagbali,” “Observe fasting,” “Go to a spiritual healer,” and so on.
Some people may even try traditional methods such as pressing the nerve near the ear, blowing into the ear, or using other methods claiming to cure deafness.
Without first understanding the actual cause of the hearing loss, different medicines and treatments may be tried for months. There is an important reason behind this:
Hearing loss is not visible from outside.
Therefore, hoping that “some treatment will make everything normal and the child will start speaking automatically” can cause parents to move from one place to another and lose valuable time.
That is why it is very important to understand where hearing loss actually occurs and what causes it. This knowledge can make parents more aware and help them take the right decision at the right time.
Where Does Hearing Loss Actually Occur?
Only the ear lobes and some part of the outer ear are visible from outside. Most of the remaining structures of the ear are located inside the skull.
The ear canal begins from the outer ear and ends at the eardrum. Beyond the eardrum are three very small bones, followed by the cochlea in the inner ear. These structures play an important role in hearing. The cochlea is somewhat shell-shaped.
The inner ear contains fluid. Within this fluid are extremely tiny cells. These cells have very fine hair-like structures on them and are therefore called hair cells.
These hair cells are connected with fine branches of the auditory nerve.
Hair cells play a very important role in the process of hearing. To understand their function, let us take a simple example from everyday life.
How Does Koyna Electricity Reach Our Homes?
We often say, “We get Koyna electricity in our home.”
Does this mean that the water from Koyna actually comes to our homes?
No.
Water from the dam is released with force, which turns turbines used to generate electricity. Electrical energy is produced through this process. The electricity then reaches our homes through wires, and the bulb lights up.
The process of hearing is somewhat similar.
How Do We Actually Hear?
Sound waves reach our ears. They travel through the ear canal and strike the eardrum. The eardrum vibrates. These vibrations are transmitted through the three tiny bones of the middle ear to the inner ear. The vibrations then affect the fluid inside the inner ear. The movement of this fluid stimulates the hair cells.
Through this process, the mechanical vibrations of sound are converted into electrical signals. These signals travel through the auditory nerve to the brain, where the brain interprets them as “sound” or “words.”
Thus, the sound waves themselves do not travel all the way to the brain in the same form.
Hair cells play a very important role in converting sound vibrations into electrical signals and transmitting the information towards the brain.
Congenital Deafness or Hearing Loss Acquired at an Early Age
In some children, the inner ear structures or hair cells may not develop normally from birth. In some other children, serious infections or other causes after birth may damage the sensitive structures of the inner ear.
For example, serious infections such as meningitis can affect hearing. Certain infections such as measles may also lead to complications affecting hearing.
Therefore, in a child with hearing loss, it is extremely important to first understand the exact cause of the hearing loss, the degree of hearing loss and the type of hearing loss.
For this, proper hearing assessment by an ENT specialist and an audiologist is important.
Then, What Is the Role of Homeopathy?
Here an important and honest question arises: If the hair cells have been damaged, can they be regenerated?
At present, there is no universally accepted and proven medicine in modern medicine that can regenerate permanently destroyed cochlear hair cells. Therefore, it would not be correct to claim that severe congenital or permanent sensori-neural hearing loss can definitely be restored only through Homeopathic medicines.
However, this does not necessarily mean that Homeopathy has no role at all in every child with hearing loss.
In Homeopathic practice, the child’s overall physical and mental condition, individual characteristics, recurrent illnesses, history from birth, onset of the problem, possible causes, family history and other complaints are considered.
The Role of Homeopathy in Such Children
However, such clinical experiences need to be evaluated scientifically, and it cannot be claimed that every child with hearing loss will experience the same result.
Some children with hearing problems may also have recurrent colds, nasal blockage, throat complaints, respiratory problems, allergic tendencies, sleep problems, appetite or digestive complaints, skin problems or other recurrent health problems. For such associated complaints, Homeopathy may be considered as a complementary treatment, along with proper diagnosis and necessary medical care.
At the same time, speech and language therapy and auditory rehabilitation are very important for helping the child learn language and communication.
A child with hearing loss does not need only medicine.
The child needs the opportunity to hear, the opportunity to learn language, the opportunity to communicate, and the right treatment at the right time.
And therefore—
“If you feel that your child is not hearing properly, do not wait; get the child tested first.
Get the correct diagnosis, start the appropriate treatment at the right time, and save the child’s valuable time.”
